Tervahovi Silos & Old Silos

As part of the transformation of the Toppilansalmi district, former industrial silo buildings were converted into loft style residential apartment buildings. The change of use required the partial demolition of the original silo structures, as well as the reconfiguration of structural systems, floor slabs and building services to meet contemporary residential and energy efficiency standards. New load bearing structures enabled spacious, double height apartments and larger openings while preserving the industrial scale and character of the buildings within the evolving cityscape of Toppilansalmi. In the building known as Old Silos, the original form has been carefully retained, while newly positioned window openings, coloured glazed winter gardens and glazed balconies introduce a contemporary layer to the historic structure. The result is a renewed industrial landmark that combines the character of the former silos with modern loft living.
